Flower Tower
Ceramics made during residency at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan
2012
During a hot Japanese Summer I built a tower, using white and red firing clay together and covering this with some traditional Japanese glazes. Some were half transparent, so the skin had many details. I cut the clay open while it was quite wet with a wooden knife, suggesting flower ornaments. Because of transportation reasons, I had to divide the tower into sections that could be stacked. I had to fire the gas kiln myself, following a preplanned graphic chart.
Mels and I made the artists’ book “Hana” about this residency, which was on show in the Library of the Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven, 2012. Curator: Diana Franssen.
