Space & Spirit consists of an extensive investigation into the character of marginal spaces - residual spaces that often are hardly experienced as such. I made complementary shapes from paper for some of the chosen spaces. Created in response to the specific nature of the space, they are made from rice paper that was infused with glue, making it semi-transparent. I used rattan cane for reinforcement.
Each paper shape is illuminated from within and each shape occasionally emits the sound of breathing, coming from a person who has a relationship with the place in question. However, the relationship between humans and space is not immediately tangible; the work is not about a person or a space. However, by using that one space, thinking about it or being afraid of it, a specific human being adds something to that space - and vice versa.
