Mariëlle van den Bergh
Originally, Mariëlle studied textile design in Tilburg and after that, she did sculptural design at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. She is a highly experienced and skilled artist who controls her materials in a masterful way. She likes to combine different materials, such as textiles and ceramics. She knows how to apply her sense of textile design to ceramics in a unique way. When she works with paper, the results are usually large, monumental objects. In the CODA Paper Art Biennial 2021, a 5-meter high mountain hung in the museum: Cliff Hanger. The work tells the story of the unstable situation that arose during the Corona period, in which rock solid certainties were undermined and we had to create new benchmarks both as a community and as humanity.
Van den Bergh travels extensively and chooses artist-in-residence sites where she can be in the middle of nature (Tasmania, Australia, Iceland, Japan). It is important to her to also be in contact with the local population in the vicinity of the residencies and to experience how they relate to the nature surrounding them. Nature is her most important source of inspiration. In her work she shows her respect for nature and shows its vulnerability.
In 2006 I saw the raw, merciless but also rough, unspoiled and unpolished nature in Tasmania. This was followed by trips to the Blue Mountains (Australia) and Iceland in search of similar natural environments. These experiences changed me forever.
Since then I have carried with me a kind of frame of reference of what “original” nature must have looked like.
Nature has always been my main source of inspiration and I also see people as part of nature. Why is seeking out this “original” nature important to me? It gives me the feeling as a human being to be part of a larger whole, of the origin and development history of the earth. The scale and size of both the physical world and the phenomenon of time fascinate me.
In recent years I have focused on the (disastrous) influence that humans have on nature and their living environment. For example, I undertake projects that focus on plastic pollution (Norwegian Coast, Natthagen, Norway 2023). In addition to creating works of art such as Plastic Footprint, (in the exhibition Traces, Museum non-conformist Art, St. Petersburg, RU 2024), in which the life cycle of plastics is investigated, one of the objectives is to stimulate awareness of the devilish dilemmas that the everyday use of this material involves. Another project is Fire and Water, which was recently on display in Marres, Maastricht and the Oda park, Venray, (Limburg Biennale), in which black fire extinguishers and water containers made of ceramics were painted with images of environmental disasters.
